Oh, and there’s a new prologue video for Tiny Tina’s DLC! It’s called “+5 to Punching: A Bunkers & Badasses Prologue”! Hey, that’s a prologue inside of a prologue, inside of a rather overt roleplaying game reference. What do they call those?

Oh, it turns out that the TF2 Chemistry Set does not have preset recipes! Each set has a semi-randomized set of requirements (common weapons, hats, stranges, and/or botkiller weapons). So one Chemistry Set may be relatively cheaper to obtain a Strangifier than another. Well, that just changes everything! Except there are still only Chemistry Sets for those 13 items. At the moment. That we know of….

Y’know, Halloween is coming….

This Just In: Our #08 Server is A Cool Place to Be

Posted on: August 5th, 2013 by Obey

“But… it’s just Dustbowl,” you may be tempted to think. But as Newbs member plague.of.crickets posted on the forums this morning, the TF2 Newbs’ #08 24/7 Dustbowl server hit #1 on gameserverdirectory.com’s list of continually populated servers. Two hours later, our server is still holding at 6th, as shown by the snip I took below:

6th Overall

Note that the top five are password-protected servers. So that makes #08 Number One globally for unpassworded servers, based on “average player count” and “average uptime percentage”, according to the website’s FAQ.  So, yay us!

Next task: Get a 2fort server in the top 200….

UPDATE: At 3:33 pm EST, the same #08 server ranked fifty-fifth on GameTracker.com, and #21 (2fort) ranked seventy-ninth. Pretty good for servers run entirely by donators!  Thanks again!

TF2 “Summer Teaser” Patch Update: July 2, 2013

Posted on: July 2nd, 2013 by Obey

SOON.

A Steam Summer Sale will come, like an unholy union between a Santa in Bermuda shorts and a vending machine, ready to bestow games to everyone cheapskate enough to pay a small price for awesome games.

While you figure out what I just said, take a gander at today’s patch update:

  1. Summer Appetizer Crates (also known as Crate #61) now drop. They require a Summer Appetizer Key, which can be bought from the Mann Co. Store for $2.49. It contains the ten Gold Star items released during the June 13 patch.
  2. FIXED:
    • A server crash when multiple Spies try to sap the same building at the same time.
    • Medic Kritzkrieg ubers occasionally becoming permanent after targeting a Spy with their uber.

Who knows when the real Summer Sale will happen? I bet it’s all just a myth.  However, some on the NewbsTF2 forum think they know when it’s coming. But hey, if you want to spend Halloween in a pumpkin patch waiting for the Great Pumpkin save your nickels for tomorrow’s indie game hit, that’s your prerogative.

Here’s the Summer Appetizer Crate and Key.

Is that a booze reference I see? That’ll make the Demoman happy.

TF2 Patch Update: June 26, 2013

Posted on: June 28th, 2013 by Obey

This update bundles patches from the past week. My apologies for not getting this posted sooner. Here’s the short of it:

  1. Summer Claim Checks are now droppable (see below).
  2. Started dropping Crate #59 (see below). Discontinued dropping Crate #55. Introduces the following new items:
    • Kukri, Huo-Long Heater, and Enforcer now exist in Strange quality.
    • 3 new Strange Parts: Medics Killed That Have Full Ubercharge, Giant Robots Destroyed, and Heavies Killed.
  3. Added seven new Unusual effects (see below).
  4. FIXED:
    • Levels not showing up on some items from the June 13 patch.
    • The Festive Frontier Justice using the wrong skin for the BLU team.
    • Paint for the Virus Doctor now paints the entire hat, instead of just its bands.
    • Liquidator’s Lid can now be painted.
    • Pocket Pyro now gets assists in Pyrovision.
    • Couvre Corner, Stout Shako, L’Inspecteur, and Full Metal Drill Hat got shadowing fixes.
    • Some VR mode updates.

Summer Claim Checks… because that Summer Sale is coming….

This tool item looks like an airport baggage claim ticket. Currently it doesn’t do anything, but soon (perhaps in the next week) you’ll be able to trade it in for a special crate. The Summer Claim Checks drop randomly alongside crates, AND can drop when a player uses a Pallet of Crates on your server. Now would be a good time to use a Pallet of Crates on a TF2Newbs server, y’know.

 Crate #59

Unlocked with a standard Mann Co. Supply Crate Key, this crate can drop the following (estimated chances in parentheses):

  • (20%) Strange Kukri — new
  • (20%) Strange Huo-Long Heater — new
  • (20%) Strange Enforcer — new
  • (10%) Strange Part: Medics Killed That Have Full Uber — new
  • (10%) Strange Part: Heavies Killed — new
  • (10%) Strange Part: Giant Robots Destroyed — new
  • (5%) War Pig
  • (5%) Fast Learner
  • (1%) random Unusual hat

Yup, most of the items are new. This crate should be a bit more popular than average.

7 New Unusual Effects!

All of these new Unusual effects can appear on any hat uncrated from a standard crate. Remember: RoboCrates have a separate list of Unusual Effects; you won’t see any on these new effects on a Robo item (unless that changes in the future). Here are the seven new effects:

Kill-A-Watt

Terror-Watt

Cloud 9 — four hearts circling, instead of just one

Aces High

Dead Presidents (and yes, that’s Saxton Hale on those dolla’ bills)

Miami Nights

Disco Beat Down

I think these Unusual Effects will be very, very popular.

I’ll be posting news of the Steam Summer Sale as soon as it happens.

TF2 Patch Update: June 13, 2013

Posted on: June 18th, 2013 by Obey

Yep, the hats just keep coming. In this patch:

  1. Ten new Steam Workshop “Gold Star” accessories.
  2. 7 new promo accessories.
  3. FIXED: The Loose Cannon’s projectiles now always play their impact sounds.

By the way, there have been a lot of mini-updates in the last two months. If you haven’t checked in lately, go read the previous posts for all the quick-to-read info.

Ten New Steam Workshop Hats

What to know:

  • 2 items for the Scout, 1 for the other classes.
  • All items designed by the community, and can be bought for US$5 to $10.
  • All items are craftable (via the three-hat formula), but craft numbers were disabled.
  • All items are nameable, giftable and tradable.
  • Dark Age Defender and Tyurtlenek are not paintable; the rest are paintable.

2. Seven New Promotional Accessories

What to know:

  •  Get all 7 items in Genuine quality by purchasing Total War: Rome II on Steam (no expiration) for $59.99; the game is slated for release in September 2013.
  • Those who pre-purchase Total War: Rome II get the Greek States Culture Pack DLC for free.
  • 1 all-class hat, and 2 matching items for the Scout, Demo, and Pyro each
  • All items are nameable, but not yet craftable, giftable, or tradable.
  • Steel Sixpack, Tartan Shade, Tartantaloons, and Hardy Laurel are not paintable. The rest are paintable.

I’m really impressed by the Pyro items; I think they and the Demo items will be quite popular.

And now for something completely different:
